Several casualties in detention have been high profile, for instance a 50-year-old hospital director who lost his life in confinement after 120 days in custody.

A detainee held with the individual stated that he was brought to the exercise area by correctional officers just prior to his death, visibly injured and exposed from the hips downward. His remains has not been returned to Gaza.

Other prisoners who perished in Israeli custody are unidentified. Correctional authorities and armed services provided researchers with the total of fatalities in confinement, and limited additional information such as the location where they died, but excluding the prisoners’ names.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, mainly detainees from Gaza, investigators were not able to correlate the minimal data given by government bodies to a death documented by advocacy bodies, via statements from former inmates or accounts in the media.
