A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
