New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
