Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.
