This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
