Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – following McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure last September.

Wolff, who holds a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding in the region of 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who each also own one-third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no official statement on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Financial Increase

The deal signifies a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of Formula 1 globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and has grossed over $630m (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Present Performance

Mercedes are runner-up in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren, with three races left this season.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is fourth in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
